12 Best Places to Sell Your Clothes for Cash
Looking for the best places to make some extra cash by selling clothes online and in person? Selling your clothes is a great way to declutter those clothes and make extra money all at the same time.
You might have clothes you don’t wear anymore because they don’t fit or aren’t your style any longer. Might as well declutter those closets and turn them into cash! There are a lot of places online and in your local area where you can sell your clothes. You can also sell them on websites that reach people all over. I’ve sold tons of clothing over the years, both online and in person. I even had an online eBay store years ago. But where to begin? Let’s get started.
First things first. Make sure the clothing is prepared to sell. You will want to make sure that your clothes look their best. This means:
Clothes should be freshly washed.
Check that they’re free from stains or tears.
Fix any missing buttons or loose threads.
Iron out wrinkles to make them look neat.
Take clear and bright photos to show off the quality and details.
Write honest and detailed descriptions for your listings.
Doing these extra steps may help you earn more money and sell your used clothing quicker.
Some additional tips are:
Always check a buyer’s reviews before you agree to a sale. This simple step can save you from a headache later on. If the site allows you to read buyer reviews, then this can be a good idea, especially if you are selling something that is high value.
Every website has its own rules, which are the “Terms of Service.” Read them and know them.
Make sure that you know what the seller fees will be. Most online platforms take a percentage of your sale, so it’s important to price your items accordingly. If you aren’t careful, the fees could take a large portion of your profit.
If you’re meeting a buyer in person, choose a busy place like a coffee shop or the parking lot at a police station. Tell a friend where you’ll be. Trust your gut and if something feels off, it’s okay to back out.
If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t ship your clothes unless you’ve got the payment and use secure payment methods and keep your personal info to yourself.
You’re almost ready to get started, so now you need to choose the method in which you’ll be selling. Online or in person. If you have vintage items, you’ll likely want to sell on Etsy. If you have designer bags that you’d like to sell, then you’d look into Rebag. There are also places that only sell children’s clothing or only adult clothing. So let’s dive in and go over my favorite options.
Where to sell online:
Poshmark- Poshmark is an app and website where you can sell gently used clothes, shoes, bags, and jewelry. This is one of the best places to sell clothes online. With Poshmark, you do most of the work yourself. You have to make the clothing listings, write the descriptions, take the pictures, and set your own pricing.
After your item sells, you’ll need to ship it to the buyer. Once they receive it, they’ll inspect it, and they have three days to do this. If everything’s okay, you’ll get paid. If you don’t hear from them after three days, Poshmark will give you your money. It’s a very smooth process.
ThredUp- ThredUp is an online store that sells clothes and accessories for women, men, and kids. All you have to do is ask for a Clean Out Kit, send in your items, and ThredUp takes care of everything else.
Etsy- While I haven’t personally sold on Etsy, I absolutely love purchasing from small businesses and individuals here. This is the type of marketplace that allows you to sell handmade clothes and any vintage clothing. To get started, all you need to do is set up a shop and list your items.
Ebay- Ah eBay. This is where my online business venture first started for me years ago. I no longer have an eBay store myself, but it’s a great place to sell because you can truly sell just about anything, and the entire world are your customers. It’s a huge platform, and you can get started by creating a listing with a starting bid. This is the lowest price you’d accept for your clothes. Don’t set this too high, because you want people to start bidding and spark interest.
Depop- Depop is an app for shopping and is popular among younger customers. Selling on Depop is easy. Just take photos of the clothes you want to sell, make sure they’re clear and show the item nicely, and write a simple but detailed description, and you’re good to go!
Kidizen- If you’re a parent, then you know just how quickly babies and kids outgrow their clothes! When my kids were little, the in-person store Once Upon a Child was the only option, but Kidizen is a great online option. It’s simple to list your items on this site. You just take a picture, describe the clothing item, and set your price.
Mercari- Mercari is a popular online marketplace where you can sell clothes, electronics, and collectibles. This site is growing bigger and bigger everyday, so it’s definitely worth checking out. Once you download the Mercari app, you’ll just upload photos, choose a category, set your price, and you’re ready to go. Once you sell and ship the item, and the buyer is happy/approves of the purchase, you’ll get paid.
Where to sell in-person:
8. Plato’s Closet- Plato’s Closet has been around for awhile and is super popular, so you may have heard of it. You’ll find stylish, gently used clothes and accessories for teens and young adults. It’s also a secondhand store where you can get cash up front for your items. They have many locations in the United States and Canada, so finding one near you shouldn’t be too difficult.
9. Once Upon a Child- This is the store that I’ve sold to the most. I always loved selling my children’s gently worn clothing here, while also usually finding some new cute clothes or toys for them. They buy gently used clothing, toys, and equipment, and will pay you cash on the spot for the items you sell. They don’t always give you much for the items, but I like that they also don’t hike up the prices to re-sell either.
10. Buffalo Exchange- Buffalo exchange is similar to Plato’s Closet, in that they’re a chain of secondhand stores, and they’re located all around the U.S. They’ll buy clothing, shoes, and accessories, and will pay cash or give you in-store credit for anything that you may want to purchase.
11. Facebook Marketplace- I’ll be honest, I have mixed feelings on this one because I’ve had such a wide range of experiences here, and it might depend on your area. It’s a super convenient way to sell items locally without the need to ship, but you also need to be very careful of scammers. I always recommend that you use Facebook Marketplace approved payment methods or require cash payment, and then meet in a public place, such as a police department, store parking lot, or coffee shop.
12. Rebag- I love this one because designer handbags are a bit of a weakness for me. Rebag is an online consignment store that specializes in high-end designer handbags, along with shoes, watches, apparel, and other accessories. They’ll purchase the items up front and then give the upfront payment to sellers.
Once you go to their website and enter the details of your bag, you’ll either get an instant offer or they’ll send you an email with an offer within a few days. You’ll then choose one of three easy methods: Consign, Trade, or Buyout. With Consign, your earnings come after your bag sells. Trade lets you swap your bag for another one you want. Buyout is when you sell your bag outright for cash.
I hope that you’ve enjoyed this article and that it will help you choose the best place to sell those unused items. Remember to be sure the items that you’re selling are clean and in good condition, in order to make the most money. Always be safe when selling and have fun!
